Seems to be Falling Sick......

Got sore throat today. :(

wonder if I caught it from some kid in Sam's playschool..............

feeling like one of the auntie teachers there.........some kids would come & give me their toys when I sit there with Sam. Makes me feel so silly, cos I don't know if I should play with them or just leave them be..............

Rain Fade

Another 1st time experience for me: rain fade.

Of course, today is not the 1st time I kena rain fade while watching my fav tv program. We get it everytime there's > medium size rainfall in our area, which means in the rainy season, nearly every day.

For Singaporeans & other fortunate (& hence ignorant) beings, rain fade happens if you receive your tv channels via satellite dish, esp. if it's not a small one. The heavy rain interferes with the reception, so the tv screen blanks out. Or rather, in my case, the program blanks out, leaving an error message.

So since the standard Astro (Malaysia's paid tv provider) satellite dish is no bigger than my current kitchen oven, you can imagine the frequency of this problem.

Hence I'm here blogging, instead of watching my tv shows, cos it's pouring again..............

Muddy Water

1st time in my life I had to shower with muddy water.

Ok, it wasn't really muddy. At least the water was clear.

But I've never had to shower with water the colour of yellow-brown earth & the smell of mud when the water pools up.

Thanks to life in KL, now I have.

Apparently something went wrong with the water pump in our building. Poor hubby barely had enough water to wash his face in the morning before work.

I didn't realise there was anything wrong when I washed mine an hour later. So went checking all the taps after reading hubby's sms. That's when I found all the muddy water.

Water still muddy when brought Sam home from school at noon. And still muddy by evening.

Didn't dare bath Sam, just wiped him down with filtered water.

I was too sweaty to be willing to skip a shower, though. So since hubby says water is not that bad, I also followed his example.

Still, thought my skin was a bit tingling after the shower. Probably my imagination.

In a way, can blame Singapore's highly efficient water system. Got so used to drinking water directly from the tap.

Only when travelling overseas do I ever have to take note of what I'm drinking (loads of mineral water bottles). Even then, I had the fortune of travelling to developed countries, or stay in big hotels where they have their own water treatment system.

Talk about exposure when living overseas..........electricity out last month, water this time.

I hope I won't get anymore such experiences!!!!!

Should I Leave Sam in Playschool?

Very troubled, about leaving Sam in playschool.

Had signed him up for The Children's House, a Montessori toddler's program in Jln Ampang Hilir, cos thought it's time for him to start learning to interact with children of his own age. And of course, had wanted to have some time to myself. 3 hrs each weekday morning may not be much, but would have relieved me a lot.

He had started 2 weeks ago, on 16 Jan, a Wednesday. Cried for nearly the entire 1.5 hrs he was there every day. Refused to eat or drink anything there too. His naps became only 30 min long, his appetite for the rest of the day dropped.

I didn't manage to get him to a normal sleeping schedule over the weekend. And he fell sick on Sunday night, fever didn't subside till Friday past. So he literally missed the whole of his 2nd week of school.

Today he clinged on to me the moment we stepped into the classroom. I'm surprised he still remembers the place after 1 whole week of absence, considering he only went there 3 times.

This time, I stayed with him for 1.5 hrs. 1st hr he never left my lap. After getting him to eat half a biscuit & his yogurt drink for snack at 10am, he started to relax, and was willing to play next to me.

Then the directress of the toddler class came in, and we chatted. Basically she was trying to assure me it's better to just leave Sam in the class instead of staying for so long.

Problem is, the moment Sam saw her, he remembered she was the one who 'took him away' the last time, and started to cling on to me again, and cried throughout the entire conversation.

In the end, I left him for a 5 min toilet break, with him crying the whole time. We left school then.

Now, I'm still undecided as to what to do tomorrow.

Should I just leave him for an hour & a half, as recommended? But next week we'll be going back to Singapore for 2 weeks CNY holiday, I really don't think this hard method makes sense with such a long break.

On the other hand, is really a bit silly, me staying in the class for so long. I felt like a new auntie in the class, didn't know what to do when another child approaches me with a toy.

Sigh!!!!!! Heartache.........

Rice-only Sam

These are the foods my poor hubby tried to give Sam for dinner today:

Fish. Prawn. Carrot. Tofu. Pumpkin.

All rejected by Sam, hence piled up on a plate as shown

What he ate????

White rice with fish soup.

Poor hubby had ordered fish soup steamboat at our fav Uncle Duck restaurant (Times Square outlet) with the express purpose of feeding Sam the fish, which used to be his favourite.

Maybe cos he just recovered from a week-long illness. But most probably, hubby & me agreed, is cos Sam hadn't had rice for 6 days already.

Hence he refused to eat anything else except for the rice.

Luckily hubby enjoyed his steamboat. If it was me, ordering fish for the sake of Sam, only to have him not touch of it...............I would probably have thrown Sam into the steamboat or something, judging by my recent moods.

Fortunately, this time I only ordered what I myself want to eat: 姜汁撞奶, which is totally unsuitable for Sam. Hence had a happy dinner! ;)

How to Feed Sick Sam?????????

Very irritating, when Sam has fever.

Since he's sick, his appetite drops. Has strong preference for liquid foods. Lucky this time he's willing to drink Dutch Lady's strawberry milk in addition to breastmilk.

In fact, he drank so much strawberry milk, he pooped 4 times today, all watery stools, since he didn't eat much solids.

Can't give him rice or porridge cos of the fever, which is very irritating, cos he seems to want to eat that. At least, when he sees us having dinner, he kept indicating the rice plate.

He didn't want macaroni in soup, nor with pasta sauce on Monday. Tuesday I specially cooked udon for him, and ended up having to eat the entire bowl myself! (not a favourite of mine, I'm a soba gal)

All he wanted from those 2 day's lunches were the carrot slices!!

So today I specially boiled some carrots for him. Even flavoured the stock with soya sauce.

And no, today not a carrot day. He only wanted the peas!!!!!!!!! Urgh!!!!!!!!

Ended up serving him bread today. Yesterday he ate 1 entire slice with tuna mayo spread (successful attempt after the udon rejection). Today, didn't want it with tuna mayo, took a whole day to finish the slice with ham-flavoured cheese spread. The garlic butter & margarine bread he only ate out of politeness.........

Didn't want the banana I forced myself to eat while still too raw for my taste (to entice him with). Willingly munched the pear my hubby ate though!!!!

Tomorrow gonna try macaroni & cheese, & some broccoli.......keeping my fingers crossed.

Hoping very hard his fever will subside totally by tomorrow & not return tonight. Otherwise, not only do I have to bring him to see the doctor again (as per doc's instructions), but I'll also have to come up with some other non-rice options for picky Sam!!!!!!

Sam is Sick Again!

Sam fell sick again!

Started running a fever on Sunday night, as high as 38.5 degC. Brought him to see the paediatrician, Dato Dr Vernon Lee, at Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre, on Monday morning. By then, he had phlegm & running nose, seems to be painful to swallow.

Doc says he has a very bad throat, need to give Sam a jab, in case it spreads to the chest. So Sam cried all the more when he was forced on his front for the jab in his buttocks.

Cost RM$208 (in cash or cheque only) for the visit, jab, & 5 different types of medicine. Poor Sam, 1st time he had to take 4 different medicines in a single day. One of the med for anti-allergic, had to finish the whole 60ml bottle! Calculated it's going to take 12 days to finish the whole course!

After his afternoon nap, Sam lost his voice! Sounded like a screeching pig when he cried for attention. Poor little guy!

Yesterday night was very worrying for me, cos Sam's temperature refused to go down. He had such a difficult time sleeping, the phlegm gets stuck in his throat whenever he turns, so he kept waking up. I had to keep sponging him & risk waking him up. The fever only went down with the 2nd med dose at 1 am.

Now Sam still doesn't have much of a voice. Fortunately, the fever seems to be going down, keeping my fingers crossed!

Sam's Crew Cut

Turns out there's a hair salon specially for children in Great Eastern Mall, next to the KidzSports & Gym.

Sam was the one who drew our attention to it: there was a barber's chair fitted as a red car, and Sam had his nose pressed up against the glass wall in his attempt to reach it. Since the price of a haircut for children below 2 yrs was only RM23 (compared to S$15), & we had no other activities planned, we decided to let Sam cut his hair then. The shop's well designed child-proof door meant Sam couldn't simply push the door in, the shop assistant had to press a button to unlock the door to let us in.

Unfortunately, while Sam enjoyed looking at the car, he didn't want to sit in it! He started fussing, so it was decided I sit on a proper chair & carry him instead. After fastening a towel around his neck, he started to cry, and cry, and cry, all through the haircut. Luckily it was a total shave; I don't see how we could have managed some fancy hairstyling!

The assistant brought him CD covers of Barney & Mickey Mouse in a attempt to calm him down, but to no avail. Luckily towards the end, his dear daddy's presence calmed him down a bit.

Of course, after the haircut, Sam began to enjoy kicking the balloon decorations on the floor, then he discovered the kid's size chairs & table, and by the end he got on to the child safety scissors, we had to entice him to leave the shop!

Vampire Sam!

Yes, I have finally been bitten!

Now all 3 women in my family who've taken care of Sam before - my mother-in-law, my own mummy, & me - have been bitten by Sam!

The worst went to my mother-in-law: Sam at 1.5 yrs already had a relatively big mouth, and for the unintentional mistake of carrying Sam when he doesn't want to be carried, Sam's maternal grandmother got a bruise the size of his open mouth on her forearm! It was 2 weeks before the bruise faded!

I was bitten on Tues, 15 Feb, while playing with him on the bed. One moment he was screaming & running on the bed excitedly, next moment he's bent down over my arm & ouch! The bruise was still aching 4 days later when I took the photo. I was "luckier" than my mother-in-law though: his lower jaw didn't make a suffiently deep impression, so my bruise was smaller, & even as I write this blog, I no longer feel the pain.

So the men of the family are immune??? Wrong!!!!

Poor hubby got bitten on Saturday morning playing with his son: the two of them were clamouring around on the bed as usual, when excited Sam pounced on his daddy and ahhhhh!!
Hubby literally had to push Sam off his chest!

Sam's top 3 teeth nearly drew blood this time! That's the strength of his love bite to his daddy!

Someday when Sam is older, I'm gonna show him this (& some of the other) blog as proof of his "vampirism"!!! ;)

Only Wanna Watch TV!!!

Self-explanatory title...........need I say more????

Friday 11 January 2008

Those were the days.......

Just watched a Taiwanese variety show in which (sorry, can't think of English equivalent right now) 失恋的人去游乐场打地鼠 (you know, the little buggers pop their heads out of the machine & you try to bang on them with the stick provided).

Brought back memories of my working days: we used to get so frustrated abt work, the whole gang of us (well, actually there's less than 6 of us in the whole group) would go off aft OT (yes, one of the reasons we're frustrated) to play the 打地鼠 machine. It was a great way to vent one's anger! Sometimes we would all play together, using our bare hands!

Another fav was the basketball machine. You get to think of nothing else but concentrate on the game for those few minutes, and aft 2 games, the arms are so tired, a good night's sleep is almost guaranteed!

Our fav place was in one of the shopping centres in Batam, where we had to go frequently. For one thing, playing there only costs half the amount in Singapore. We went so frequently, we actually accumulated enough prize tokens to exchange for some prizes!

Another reason was, most of Singapore's game centres didn't stock such machines by that time, it wasn't the 'in' game then. Now, if only I can remember where we went to play........I only remember going there for supper simply so that we can relax in this manner..........

Sam has recovered!

Sam has finally fully recovered from whatever it was that hit him last week! Now back to his usual playful, energetic self. Below is clip of Sam playing with my hairband yesterday: was trying to use it to cover his eyes & mouth, which he had managed to do so before I got my hands on my hp......

His appetite has also returned fully, and today seems perfectly fine aft his fav yogurt drink, so I guess it'll be safe to put him back on his usual meaty diet from tomorrow onwards.
Got a lot of fattening to do, see how thin he has become in a week!! :(

Penang holiday: Day 3 - Penang Hill

The only part of Penang hill we saw: the furnicular train station at the bottom of the hill! This was the most frustrating, & most amusing, part of our trip........

We had signed up for a tour in our hotel, cos thought it will be more convenient this way to visit the Kek Lok Si temple (极乐寺). Turns out that the 'tour' is simply our own private driver in a sedan car! Still, it's still a cheaper way @ RM55/person (for the 4 hr tour) than the hotel taxi we took on day 1 (@ RM20/hr).
*Yes, I know there're cheaper methods of transportation, but with a toddler & no car of our own, taxi's the fastest & most convenient way to go. I don't wanna spend my vacation travelling!*

Anyway, though we hadn't planned to go up Penang hill, we thought there was no harm in it, since it was part of the package, even though we have to pay for the train tickets separately.

It was fortunate (I thought at that time) the tour operator got the 10 am train ticket for us the day before, cos by the time we reached the station at 9am, the ticket counter showed the tickets were sold out all the way to the 12:30pm train! So we whiled away the waiting time watching Sam play with other children outside the station.

The joke was when we went into the station at 9:50am to catch the train. There's already a long queue ahead of us, all for the 10am train. And right in front of the waiting furnicular, people holding the 9:30am train tickets!

And only half the 10am group managed to squeeze into the train. Yes, squeeze. There were no seats, everyone was standing, so it's a matter of how many people were willing to squeeze their way into not-so-new-looking furnicular train cabins.

Having sat in comfortable versions of the vernicular in Europe, this Penang version is a total letdown! As I watched the 10am train leave the station, my aching arms (from carrying Sam, had not expected this problem, so didn't bring carrier!) & sweating body told me it's enough!

Why waste time on a destination we had not really wanted to go to in the 1st place anyway???? Luckily the train tickets costs 'only' RM8 for 2 adults, else it would really have been a heartbreaking experience!

Only Wanna Blog!

Now only in the mood to blog, or rather, to make changes to my blog.

Don't feel like replying my emails or go Facebook. Not even in the mood to watch my YouTube subscriptions or read my fav entertainment news!

Why? Don't really know. The mood just hits me, I guess.

Am thinking, maybe also cos the blog is mine, my own creation. Feels a bit like my work, my responsibility.

Best of all, not only can I work on it whenever I want to, I can change my mind abt it as often as I want to, without anyone breathing down my neck! ;)

Penang holiday: Day 2 - The Blue Mansion

A cute, albeit slightly disgusting, pose of Sam, playing excitedly with garden stones outside the Blue Mansion.

We arrived at the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (more famously known as the Blue Mansion) just as the free tour started at 3 pm. Had to park the pram & carry Sam since tour continued up on the 2nd storey.

Lucky for us, Sam was relatively well behaved that day: though he was bored with us standing around listening to the guide, he didn't cry or scream. We ended up taking turns to listen to the tour while the other carry Sam around to see more 'interesting' items & stuff him with biscuits.

I really quite like the Blue Mansion. Thought it was very well restored. Definitely need to take the tour, especially for an ignorant woman like me (hubby claims he knew most of the stuff the guide talked abt!). Feels good to know a bit abt the mix of Chinese & Western architecture during the British settlement era......
Only 'regret' is that only the centre court of the mansion is open to the public, the 2 wings being converted to B&B guestrooms, & are thus out of bounds to protect the privacy of the guests.
After the 1 hr tour, hubby practised his photography on the outside of the mansion (no photography allowed inside the house. Guess they need to earn from the postcards!) This was possible cos once again, Sam was happily engaged playing with the stones lining the perimeter of the garden.
Recalling that, I sometimes wonder why I bother spending money on toys for Sam! A few stones from a garden/aquarium seems to suffice for him!!!!!

Sam Fell Sick

Finally have the mood to blog.

Sam fell sick on Tues night. Wed afternoon vomited, by night time had diarrhea, & fever up to 39.5 degC, his highest ever. We got so worried of our little darling we went on to A&E that night.

Thus spending our 4th wedding anniversary night sitting in Gleneagles' A&E waiting for blood test results. Thank goodness Sam didn't have dengue fever!

By now, his fever is still fluctuating, still had diarrhea this afternoon. He must have picked up something from the ground & ate it, else wouldn't have gotten so sick!

It was really heartbreaking to see him throw up all the breastmilk, and very worrying abt dehydration with all this diarrhea. He's lost so much weight, he seems to be one size smaller now.

And I still have to worry abt things like: whether his watery poop on the bedsheets can be washed off. And pray that his diaper will hold the poop while I carry him to the bathtub to hose him down.

Luckily now he seems to be getting better, at least now he has the mood to play, will babble a little, will smile at us, and most importantly, will ask to eat what we're eating!

It's such a torture telling Sam he can't eat the rice or the oily meat, we ended up cooking macaroni for dinner, only to find that he wasn't interested in eating the macaroni at all! Finally gave in & given him 2 small bites of the meatballs.

Now hoping very, very hard he wouldn't have diarrhea again tonight because of the meatballs........

How I Welcomed the Year 2008

How I prepared for the year 2008......

I fell asleep in the evening of 31st Dec 2007 after putting Sam to bed.
So I didn't get to do anything.

How I knew it was the year 2008......

Sam got woken up by the celebration fireworks at KLCC (opposite our place) and climbed onto my tummy, waking me up.

How I welcomed the year 2008......
I craddled Sam in my arms to put him back to sleep, all the while listening to the din from the 5 min fireworks display. Didn't even catch a single glimpse from the bedroom window, having drawn the curtains to keep out the city lights.

Never have I felt a more pathetic way to start a new year!
Hope I'll have a better Chinese New Year!
